What you’re about to see is somewhat of a time capsule. If The Outsiders was produced 10-15 years beyond 1982, this book wouldn’t exist. Computers, the Internet, Cell phones, and Digital Cameras have all made Polaroids and physical Continuity Books obsolete.
Inside this important glimpse into the creative process to bring The Outsiders to life is Dee Dee Petty’s personal script, filled with notes and continuity Polaroids to keep track of all the various looks the characters would be going through as the story progressed. Should Coppola need to return to a scene, days, or even weeks later, the Polaroids would serve as a photographic memory as to how each of the characters looked in that particular scene. Often times these Polaroids were taken between takes by Dee Dee, who clearly is a good photographer as well. This explains why many of the actors chose to close their eyes during their continuity shots, as they didn’t want to be distracted on the next take of the movie with the residual “spots” in their eyes from the Polaroid flash.
We also see many of Dee Dee Petty’s handwritten notes in the script margins, and we can track as she perfected the perfect “recipe” for Cherry Valance’s (Diane Lane’s) red hair, etc.
Some of the Polaroids were reportedly “doodled” on by the playful C. Thomas Howell, and they are also seen here in their original state.
This Continuity Book also serves as a time capsule to the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the Spring of 1982. Many of the Background Artists, or Extras as they were called then, are seen here for the scenes that they appeared in, as well as many supplemental pages provided by Zoetrope Studios suggesting local business and services to those crew, such as Jack and Dee Dee, who were from out of town that may want to enjoy a meal, or go shopping on the weekend. I remind you that this is 10-15 years before the Internet!
I discover so much more each time I open this unique and important book. It’s a true time capsule filled with amazing photographs that have not lost their luster or color over these 40-plus years, and I hope that you enjoy all this never-before-seen material during the production of The Outsiders as much as I do.
Enjoy, and Stay Gold.
